Personal Space Invaders

This has been an idea I’ve had in my magic notebook of goofy shirt ideas for awhile now, but was always working on other things or school or just whatever. I finally just said “it’s time!” and put it together in the last few days. I’m surprised because I totally got it done in record time for me! Since this is a blog about art-chitecture on Mars (I’ll put up some actual architecture stuff eventually), here’s the latest art piece as it progressed, enjoy!

The first thing I did was take sample pictures of Space Invaders and sketch them out in Rhino3D, one of the major programs I use for creating architectural models, at least in undergrad. This allows me to create perfect 3D models of the invaders, and move them however I like. I imported a quick sketch of an astronaut I’d doodled just to get the placement right, and started scooting and pushing things around till it made me laugh.

My viewports for Rhino 3D that I used to build up the space invaders and place them as I liked. Lets you get perfect dimensions and scale.

Just because I felt like it, I also did a quick render of the main view-port. I basically scooted the camera around looking at the main 3D model until I thought I had what I wanted, and then you just have to click render! This also becomes the view that lets me export my line work, so the render below (minus the astronaut) gets turned into 2D black lines that I can begin really working on in Adobe Illustrator.

This isn't actually part of anything, but if you build a 3D model of something, of course you're going to render it! Looks like he's being attacked by ghosts, lol.

From here, I’ll give you a quick synopsis of each step within the image itself, because come on, who really reads everything when you can just look at the pictures? Save you some time! First up, the initial Illustrator work.

These are the quickly filled outlines of the invaders, done in AI, which I'll begin really working on in Photoshop as it's the program I'm most comfortable with.

This was the initial work in PS, getting a quick working background color to set the feel, then showing the juxtaposition between the flat colors I did in AI, and the addition of shadows for depth in PS. That depth really makes it feel more like a crowd!

This is looking to figure out the form of the Astronaut. he's being squished after all, no personal space (ha) so getting the shoulders right, head angled properly, and just fitting him into the scene were the goals. Detail and not looking sketchy comes after this.

Here I've refined the astronaut edges, given a few details such as his boots being themed on Apollo era moon shoes, and removed his retro antennae thing. I liked it, but with his little "grumpy scribble" floating in the air it looked like a smoke stack. You can't smoke in your helmet guys!

Here I'm getting the fill colors for the astronaut. This is a lot of me zooming in and out, making grumbly noises, and tweaking shades so the flat colors actually seem to create depth in any meaningful way without shading with gradients. Getting there!

And done! I finished filling in the astronaut, got all the colors the way I liked, then darkened the background a bit to really make the colors and main subject pop more. This meant inverting the scribble color, which came out nice, and the black lines making up the invaders (if you can still see them) were replaced with dark hues of whatever color that particular invader was. Makes it more cohesive!

I hope you got as much a kick out of this as I do, look at those friendly little space invaders, all about personal space. Better than world domination anyways yeah? I’m pretty sure if you just give them a hug though they’ll leave you alone, we all want a little attention from time to time. Thanks for reading!

    1. I’ve actually attached my DBH store to this blog! I think it’s in the “information” section or something, but you can find it easily by googling “TenkenNoKaiten Design By Humans”. That’s my artist handle, and the site. Glad you like it! I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out! Thanks so much!
